| Plot Synopsis: The 1950s, despite its popular imagery, was not all bobby socks and poodle skirts. It also birthed the Beat generation - a loose collection of poets and novelists joined by a carefree attitude and a disrespect of The Establishment. Neal Cassady (Jane) was a Beat poet; a close friend of Jack Kerouac and the inspiration for his novel, On the Road. This film is loosely based on an eight-page letter sent by Neal to Jack, detailing his thoughts and feelings as he struggled with a suicidal lover (Forliani), an alcoholic friend (Reeves), and the pressure to conform to a white picket fence lifestyle. | ||
| Director's Comments: "When I asked [Keanu] if he was interested in playing Harry, he said, "Shouldn't you get Steve Buscemi?" I laughed and told him, "We'll put a mask on you!"--Stephen T. Kay | Keanu's Comments: "I loved [playing this character]. When you're not playing the hero in a piece, you don't have such a linear obligation. You generally get to do more stuff--stuff being character things. Actors always look to play the villain, because there's more to do." | |
