| Plot Synopsis: An ordinary little boy (Wiesendanger) from Seattle is a thrust into an extraordinary situation when a Tibetan monk identifies him as eing the reincarnation of a revered Lama. Bewildered, his parents (Fonda and Issak) agree to allow the monks to instruct the boy in the tenets of Buddhism in an effort to determine if he is the one they are searching for. Through these teachings, Bertolucci intertwines the boy's story with the beautifully scripted tale of Prince Siddhartha's (Reeves) transformation into Buddha, the Enlightened One. | ||
| Director's Comments: "As soon as we met, I was struck by his extreme openness. I didn't know if his inner life was complicated or not but his face, his eyes, and his movements revealed the most perfect innocence. Imagine a young man who has never left home, who does not know the meaning of the words 'old age', 'sickness', or 'death'. Siddhartha was as innocent as that and Keanu convinced me he could be that person."--Bernardo Bertolucci | Keanu's Comments: "I started to meditate and read about Buddhism. I started to think about old age, suffering, and death. You really try to have an emotive experience with the suffering of other sentinent beings. That's a beginning. I packed one suitcase - most of it was books - and I just went. The falling away of accoutrements was easy." | |
